Tummy Tuck Recovery Weeks 3 to 6: Back to Work and Driving

Key takeaways

  1. Weeks 3 to 6 are when most people return to work and driving and feel broadly back to normal by about 6 weeks.
  2. Time off work runs about 2 to 6 weeks: desk work at the earlier end, manual or lifting jobs at the later end.
  3. Driving typically resumes at about 2 to 4 weeks, once off strong painkillers and able to do an emergency stop comfortably.
  4. You usually keep the compression garment on for about 6 weeks, and avoid core work and heavy lifting for about 6 to 8 weeks.
  5. Swelling fluctuates for months; full recovery, including the final shape, takes around 3 months.

Weeks 3 to 6 after a tummy tuck are when most people return to work and driving and start to feel broadly back to normal, with full recovery still some weeks off. Most people feel largely themselves again by about 6 weeks, while full recovery, including swelling settling and the final shape emerging, takes around 3 months1. This is the stretch where life quietly resumes.

By this point in my own recovery the diary entries got shorter again, because I was simply busier living. Here is what to expect across these middle weeks, checked by a consultant plastic surgeon. For the full arc, see the complete guide to a tummy tuck and the tummy tuck recovery timeline.

When can you go back to work?

Most people return to work somewhere in weeks 3 to 6, with time off running about 2 to 6 weeks depending on the job. Desk-based work sits at the earlier end of that range and manual or lifting work at the later end1. Even at a desk, expect to tire and to need to get up and move regularly rather than sit braced all day.

I returned to a desk job at the start of week three on shorter days and built up, which felt right. For a full breakdown by job type, including phased returns and what to ask your employer, see time off work after a tummy tuck. If your work is physical, plan honestly for the longer end.

When can you drive again?

Driving is typically resumed at about 2 to 4 weeks, once you are off strong painkillers and can do an emergency stop comfortably. The test is practical: you must be in full control and able to brake hard without hesitation or being held back by pain2. Check your surgeon and insurer are happy before you start.

My first proper drive was around week three and I deliberately tried a firm stop in an empty car park before taking it on the road. It is a good way to be honest with yourself about whether you are ready, rather than guessing.

The compression garment and gentle activity

You usually keep the compression garment on through these weeks, worn for about 6 weeks in total, while gradually increasing gentle walking. The garment supports the healing tissues and reduces swelling, and many people wear it almost continuously through weeks 3 to 6 before tapering off as advised3. Walking distances grow, but it stays low-impact.

Crucially, there is still no core work and no heavy lifting for about 6 to 8 weeks, with a return to full activity staged with your surgical team4. For how the garment should fit and how to manage it day to day, see the tummy tuck compression garment guide.

What about swelling in weeks 3 to 6?

Swelling is still very normal and tends to fluctuate, often worse later in the day or after being active. This is the start of what many patients call the long swelling phase: full recovery, including swelling settling and the final shape emerging, takes around 3 months1. The garment and a sensible pace both help, but patience does most of the work.

My honest beat here: I had a flat morning tummy and a noticeably puffier evening one for weeks, and it threw me until I understood it was expected. Do not judge your result yet; the abdomen you see at six weeks is not the abdomen you will have at six months.

The scar at six weeks

By six weeks the scar is healing but still early, typically raised and pink or red, with fading and flattening happening over about 12 to 18 months. The scar is permanent and is managed, not removed, and its final appearance varies with skin type, genetics and aftercare3. Many surgeons start scar care, such as silicone, once the wound is fully closed.

For what the scar looks like and how it changes, see the tummy tuck scar guide, and for what actually helps it fade, see tummy tuck scar care. At six weeks mine was still firm and pink, and knowing the 12-month-plus timeline stopped me panicking about it.

What is normal and what to watch for at this stage

Fluctuating swelling, patchy numbness, tightness on activity and tiring easily are all normal across weeks 3 to 6. Altered sensation across the lower abdomen often improves over months4. Even at this later stage, contact your surgical team if you notice:

  • A hot, swollen or painful calf, or breathlessness or chest pain (possible blood clot): seek urgent help.
  • A new tense, growing swelling under the skin (a seroma can appear weeks out and is one of the most common complications).
  • Spreading redness, fever, increasing pain or wound breakdown that suggests infection or healing problems.

By the end of week six you are back at work, driving, and mostly living normally, even if the final shape and the scar are still settling. From here recovery is about patience: read tummy tuck recovery week 2 if you want to look back, or the tummy tuck scar guide for the long game ahead.

Common questions

Are you back to normal 6 weeks after a tummy tuck?

Most people feel broadly back to normal by about 6 weeks, returning to work, driving and most daily activities. Full recovery takes longer though: swelling continues to settle and the final shape emerges over around 3 months, and the scar keeps maturing well beyond that. Six weeks is a milestone, not the finish line.

When can you drive after a tummy tuck?

Driving is typically resumed at about 2 to 4 weeks, once you are off strong painkillers and can perform an emergency stop comfortably without hesitation. Check that your insurer and surgeon are happy first, since driving while not in full control or on strong medication can be unsafe and may affect cover.

When can you exercise after a tummy tuck?

Light walking is encouraged early, but no core work or heavy lifting for about 6 to 8 weeks, and a return to full activity is staged with your surgical team. Pushing core or lifting too soon risks the muscle repair, so you build back gradually rather than rushing into your old routine.

How long do you wear the compression garment after a tummy tuck?

A compression garment is usually worn for about 6 weeks in total to support healing and reduce swelling. Many people wear it through weeks 3 to 6 almost continuously, then taper off as the surgeon advises. Your exact schedule depends on your surgeon and how your swelling is settling.

Why is there still swelling weeks after a tummy tuck?

Swelling is normal for weeks to months and tends to fluctuate, often worse later in the day or after activity. Full recovery, including swelling settling and the final shape emerging, takes around 3 months. The compression garment and gradual return to activity help, but patience is the main thing.
