What to Buy Before a Tummy Tuck: The Recovery Kit That Actually Helped

Key takeaways

  1. Buy for the bent-forward weeks: a recliner or pillow wedge matters most because that posture is expected for roughly the first 1 to 2 weeks.
  2. A grabber and front-fastening clothes save you from stretching while the abdominal muscle repair heals.
  3. You will likely need drain-care supplies, as drains typically stay in for about 1 to 2 weeks.
  4. Have spare compression garments ready: one is usually worn for about 6 weeks, day and night.
  5. Stock up before the day, because you cannot lift or strain and you are off driving for about 2 to 4 weeks.

The most useful thing you can buy is anything that lets you rest semi-upright and reach things without stretching, because for the first weeks you cannot lift, strain, or stand up straight. A tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) usually repairs the separated abdominal muscles, and you walk and rest bent forward to protect that repair for roughly the first 1 to 2 weeks1. Your shopping list should be built around that single fact.

This is the kit I actually used, not a generic list, with the clinical facts checked by a consultant plastic surgeon. For the full week-by-week story, see my tummy tuck diary, and for the complete overview, start with what a tummy tuck is.

Buy for the bent-forward weeks first

The most important purchases support the bent posture. A recliner or a firm wedge of pillows lets you sleep and rest semi-upright with your knees bent, matching the bent-forward posture expected for roughly the first 1 to 2 weeks2. This was the single best thing I borrowed.

It is the muscle repair, more than the skin, that makes this necessary: the rectus muscles are stitched back together, so anything that straightens you out pulls on the repair. I explain the nightly setup in detail in sleeping after a tummy tuck.

A grabber and front-fastening clothes

A grabber (reacher) and loose, front-fastening clothes stop you stretching for anything. Because you cannot bend or raise your arms easily while the muscle repair heals, I lived in button or zip tops and soft, slip-on bottoms that sat below the scar. Avoid anything you pull over your head in the first weeks.

A compression garment is usually worn for about 6 weeks to support healing and reduce swelling3, so choose clothes that fit comfortably over it. Slip-on shoes saved me from bending to my feet entirely.

Drain-care supplies

If you have drains, prepare for them. Surgical drains typically stay in for about 1 to 2 weeks, removed once output falls below a set threshold1. I bought a lanyard to secure them, kept a small notebook to record the output, and had loose clothes that hid the tubing.

Some surgeons use progressive tension (quilting) sutures to reduce or avoid drains, so check whether you will have them. Either way, drains are a normal, temporary part of recovery, not a sign that something is wrong. The full detail is in tummy tuck drains explained.

Spare compression garments and scar supplies

Have at least one spare garment so you are never without one while the other is washed. The garment is worn for about 6 weeks, day and night, so it has its own entry: the tummy tuck compression garment. Buy the size your surgeon recommends, not a smaller one.

For later, silicone-based scar products help once the wound has fully healed; the scar is permanent and fades and flattens over about 12 to 18 months4. I did not rush this, but it was good to have ready. The first emotional look at that scar is in the first shower and looking at the scar.

Stock the kitchen and plan for no driving

Stock up before the day, because you are off driving for about 2 to 4 weeks, until you are off strong painkillers and able to perform an emergency stop comfortably3. I batch-cooked, moved everyday items to waist height, and arranged help for the first week.

I also kept gentle laxatives and plenty of water to hand, because painkillers cause constipation and straining is the last thing you want over a fresh muscle repair. Moving gently and often also lowers the risk of blood clots, a serious risk of any major body-contouring surgery2. For what those first weeks were really like, see recovery: what no one tells you, and to weigh the whole decision, tummy tuck vs liposuction.

Common questions

What do you need to buy before a tummy tuck?

The essentials I actually used were a recliner or pillow wedge to sleep semi-upright, a grabber or reacher, front-fastening loose clothes, drain-care supplies, spare compression garments, easy-to-reach water and snacks, gentle laxatives for constipation from painkillers, and a raised setup so nothing needs lifting. Buy for the bent-forward first 1 to 2 weeks when you cannot stretch or strain.

Do you need a recliner after a tummy tuck?

You need a way to sleep and rest semi-upright in a bent position to protect the muscle repair, and a recliner is the easiest way to do that. A firm wedge of pillows works too. The bent-forward posture is expected for roughly the first 1 to 2 weeks, so whatever you choose should keep your torso raised and knees supported.

What clothes should you buy for tummy tuck recovery?

Loose, front-fastening clothes you can put on without raising your arms or bending: button or zip tops, soft elasticated or slip-on bottoms that sit below the scar, and slip-on shoes. You will wear a compression garment for about 6 weeks, so choose clothes that fit comfortably over it. Avoid anything you pull over your head in the first weeks.

What supplies do you need for tummy tuck drains?

If you have drains, you will want a way to secure them, such as a lanyard or a drain-belt, plus a notebook to record the output, since drains are removed once output falls below a set threshold and typically stay in for about 1 to 2 weeks. Loose clothing that hides the tubing and gauze for around the sites also helps.

How long before a tummy tuck should you prepare your home?

Set everything up before the day, because afterwards you cannot lift or strain and you are off driving for about 2 to 4 weeks. I stocked food, batch-cooked, moved everyday items to waist height, and arranged help for the first week. Having it all ready meant I never had to reach, stretch, or ask someone to rush out.
